The Journey of Peter and Shella
Claveria's Embrace: Where History Whispers & Nature Smiles
Discover the soul of the place we call home.
Shellas' Sunkissed Escape is deeply rooted in the enchanting municipality of Claveria, Cagayan – the "Coastal Paradise of the North." Cradled between verdant mountains and the shimmering Babuyan Channel, Claveria offers more than just a stunning backdrop; it possesses a rich society woven from threads of history, captivating local legends, and an atmosphere of unparalleled warmth.
Echoes of History: Wander through Claveria, and you'll feel the echoes of its past. Established as the Spanish mission 'Cabicungan' in 1633, and later renamed in honor of Governor-General Narciso Clavería, our town has long served as a vital coastal point and a historic "Gateway to Apayao." From ancient settlements that first knew these shores, through the Spanish colonial era leaving its architectural marks, to the resilient spirit of generations of Cagayanos shaping its present. The land itself holds memories, inviting exploration and reflection.
Whispers of Legend: Beyond the documented past, Claveria vibrates with folklore passed down through generations. Listen closely, and you might hear tales of mystical sea guardians embodied in the striking Lakay-Lakay and Baket-Baket rock formations, enchanted forest groves, or serendipitous encounters whispered on the ocean breeze. These legends, deeply woven into our culture, infuse the air with a touch of magic and wonder, adding depth to the stunning natural beauty.
The Heartbeat of Community: Yet, Claveria's most defining treasure is its undeniable positive atmosphere. It’s a place cherished for its peace and tranquility, where life moves at a gentler pace, genuine smiles are the common currency, and the renowned warmth and hospitality of the local community embraces visitors like family. It's described as a "perfect antidote to the noise and stress of the 'tiring metropolis.'" There's a profound sense of serenity and belonging here, making it the perfect sanctuary to reconnect – with nature, with heritage, and with yourself.
This unique blend of rich history, enchanting legends, and heartwarming community spirit is the very essence we cherish and aim to share with every guest at Shellas' Sunkissed Escape. It's the foundation upon which our story is built.
Our Story: The Heart of Claveria
In the heart of Claveria, our resort stands as a testament to love, heritage, and a shared mission. It all began when Peter, a Belgian scientist, met Shella, a teacher with deep Ilocano roots and a passion for design, in the vibrant streets of Manila. Their connection was instant, transcending borders and cultures. Together, they embarked on a journey that would not only unite their lives but also inspire them to give back to the Filipino community.
Shella holds a bachelor's degree in education, specializing in early childhood, and is also a talented fashion designer.
Peter has a background in molecular medicine and is currently involved in development projects across Apayao.
As their family grew with the arrival of their daughter, Thalia, Peter and Shella felt a deep calling to help Filipinos reconnect with their roots. They envisioned a place where people could celebrate their heritage while embracing sustainable living. This dream blossomed into Shellas' Sunkissed Escape, offering accommodations, eco-friendly vehicle rentals, and immersive eco-tours.
Nestled in the lush landscapes of Claveria, our resort is more than just a destination; it’s a sanctuary where families can explore the rich history and culture of the region. We celebrate the diverse traditions of the Philippines, creating a space where stories are shared and heritage is honored.
The Legend of Lakay-Lakay & Baket-Baket: Guardians of Claveria
Etched into our coastline are stories whispered by the waves...
Dominating the view near Taggat Lagoon stand two majestic rock formations: Apo Lakay-Lakay (Venerable Old Man) and Apo Baket-Baket (Venerable Old Woman). Legend tells of a couple blessed with riches from the sea, who grew greedy and refused to share their bounty with an old beggar asking for help. As punishment for their selfishness, their beloved only son was turned to stone. In their despair, they too were transformed into the massive rocks we see today, a timeless reminder of the importance of generosity.
A third formation, Ubing-Ubing (Child), found near Sentinela Cove, represents their son, forever waiting across the waves. Yet, the story evolves. These formations are now considered sacred guardians by the local community, believed to protect our fishing village from storms and the perils of the sea. Our local fishermen often make small offerings when passing near, seeking safe passage from these ancient sentinels. This enduring legend connects us deeply to our landscape, its spiritual power, and the values of community.
