Decoherence and the Double-Slit Experiment: Why Conscious Observation Is Not Required
Abstract
The disappearance of the interference pattern in Young’s double-slit experiment upon the acquisition of which-path information is frequently misrepresented as requiring a conscious observer. In this brief note, we dispel this philosophical misinterpretation by framing the “observer effect” strictly within the mathematical formalism of quantum decoherence. By treating the detector as a macroscopic environmental system and evaluating the joint unitary evolution, we demonstrate that the disappearance of the interference fringes is a direct mathematical consequence of environmental entanglement. Extracting the reduced density matrix of the photon via the partial trace operation suppresses the off-diagonal interference terms, yielding a classical probability distribution without invoking wavefunction collapse or conscious intervention. 1
